I downloaded the free trial of the CC version a while ago and gave up as I just couldn’t understand how to do anything. But as the Adobe programs are the industry standard, I decided I really needed to learn Photoshop, so reinstalled it and played around, again I was completely lost.

Lots of people have advised watching videos on You tube etc, and yes, it is possible to learn from those, but for me, I wanted a structured, start from the beginning kind of learning course. That’s where this book comes in. It really is like being in a classroom, as each chapter is a lesson or lots of lessons really.

With the book comes the opportunity to download lesson files, and these really are crucial to the method of learning. Rather than just reading about the various functions of PS, this book teaches them in the most practical way, you use the starting photograph you’ve downloaded from the lesson files to achieve an edited end result, following step by step, click by click instructions. I’ve only completed the first few chapters so far but felt compelled to write a useful review as I’m so impressed.

My understanding of Photoshop has increased drastically already and I have learnt so much that I never would have picked up just from playing around with it or watching videos.

The book covers a wide range of topics, such as the work area, cloning, selection tools, layers, flattening and saving files, masks, moving and deleting objects, adding text, camera raw, merging photos to replace faces, and much much more. It also has a chapter on editing video, although as a photographer that bit doesn’t interest me. So far I have worked through the chapters completing the lessons and this practical step by step learning has really helped.

Where before I was just lost, now I am starting to grasp it, I’m sure it will be a long learning process even after completing the book, but there is so much to learn and understand in here that it is a great basis from which to start.

I have watched a couple of videos too, and I actually understand them now that I’m starting to learn the basics from the beginning. Don’t be fooled into thinking it will only teach you the basics though, there is some fairly complex and advanced stuff in here too, but as it’s all broken down bit by bit, it’s really easy to follow.

Very highly recommended. One day, someone will write a truly clear and concise manual to guide the uninitiated through one of the most powerful software programmes of all time. This is a good step-by-step, educational series based on mostly one-hour “classes”. Be warned, though: YOU will inadvertently hit a key and your software will lock you out, and the book will not help you reboot!

One person found this helpful. Great guide to introduce you to Photoshop. I have the kindle edition and find it easy to have my iPad open with the kindle app running and use it this way. My only criticism and I’m being picky here is that I would like to have more ‘real life’ examples of why you would use certain things over others sizes and percentages really.

I’ve learned a heck of a lot more by using this book, and combined with a lot of good videos on YouTube I feel I have a working knowledge of Photoshop CC now. The perfect book for anyone trying to get to grips with using Photoshop.

I’d say it’s a good book for most, from beginners up to fairly high level users. Whilst being very useful for beginners I have to say most of the instructions in the lessons are clear however in a couple of lessons there are definitely some errors on procedures.

I went through one lesson in particular several times and whilst getting similar results to the book I was still befuddled my working process was different to the one in the book even thoughI followed instructions very carefully.
