Unable to activate Office – “Temporary Server Issues” – Microsoft Community – Question Info

We have a volume license for Office Standard with about installs. When we install Office on a new PC it appears to have installed and activated just fine and the end user will use Office with no problems for about months then the problems start Office will give an error that it is not activated or an error that says “The Trial Period is Over, Please Activate your copy of Office”.
Microsoft Office Support has been totally ineffective in helping us with this issue. In fact it took over 2 weeks to get them to even acknowledge we were customers and entitled to support that we had purchased with our license agreement.
It has been a mess trying to work with them. Removed the users profiles from the PC’s and Removed and Reinstalled office. This is also only a temporary fix as well. One of the PC’s in the IT department began having the issue and we have had Office support remoted into the PC on 3 occasions for over 2 hours each while they try to figure out what is going on. No progress has been made This will help you keep track of activations and perform remote activations.
Also allowing you to plug in a key if needed remotely. This is for MAK keys. Your problem sounds like the Office clients are using a KMS license server and is failing to validate the license after a period of time. Once you perform this action it should be set for the lifespan of Windows on that PC or the hard drive dies.
What’s happening is that the trial version of Office that’s foisted on us by many OEMs becomes the primary version. I’ve had activation issues right out of the box with Dell PCs until I realized that the issue is the idiotic trial versions preinstalled by Dell were still the versions actually being executed. Office uses the Office client software but has a trial period of 60 or 90 days depending on the offer going on at the time of purchase.
We remove all versions of Office supplied by the OEM as well as any other bloatware we find as a standard practice. KMS is better for non-mobile devices because you can keep track of these issues with reporting easier. It’s also pretty simple to setup. It’s just DNS really, and you can change the key on the workstation using the built in office keytools from the command line. Depending on your firewall configuration, it keeps all extraneous “am I licensed” network traffic on your local network as the machines authenticate against the internal KMS server and not the one on the interwebz.
You could always set it up, point some of the machines at it and see if it resolves your problems. If not, you’ve only wasted half a day setting it up. How are you installing the program? Maybe the license checker is failing because it doesn’t have the correct privileges? Server: dsdxxx. Is this telling me I may have a KMS running on “cergxxx. Yes Sir it is. I used this same method at my last job. They had no idea it was even there and hosting clients for licensing.
We do have appear to have a “rouge” KMS server on a legacy server. We are having some difficulty in removing it. The person that set it up did poorly then tried to remove it incorrectly it looks like.
This person was the entire IT dept. They no longer work here and we have a 7 person team now. Looks like what we are going to do is move the legacy patient and billing data to a new VM and shut this one down for good.
