But how can Jane be the new Thor, you mask ask? The answer lies in the film’s Marvel Comics inspirations. Love and Thunder, the fourth movie worthy of the title of Thor , is not only bringing back Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, and director Taika Waititi, but also Portman. Read on for a rundown on who Jane Foster is in the comics, why she takes up the hammer, what happened to Thor in the Aaron book, and what else we might see in Thor: Love and Thunder.

In the comics and in this article, Thor, son of Odin, is referred to as Odinson for clarity. Jane Foster has been part of the Thor comic books since the s. In her original incarnation, Jane was a nurse who later became a doctor, and she worked with Dr. Jane remained a steadfast ally of both Thor and other Marvel superheroes through it all.

In Thor: God of Thunder 12, Jane was diagnosed with breast cancer, and started treatment. Years would go by in the real world before what Fury said to him was revealed, but the effect was immediately devastating and long-lasting. Odinson dropped the hammer, unable to pick it up again, no matter how hard he tried. Thor was no longer worthy. As Frost Giants unleashed a ferocious attack on Earth, a dark figure bent down and picked up the hammer as it called to her—a woman, and the only name she would give was Thor, Goddess of Thunder.

As Thor, Jane had the same superhuman strength, speed, endurance, flight, and lightning powers as Odinson. As she flew to Earth to find the Frost Giants after she transformed into Thor, she felt Mjolnir guide her both in flight and in battle. Her connection to the hammer only grew stronger with time. He understood then that the hammer chose a new Thor, a worthy hero, and trusted its judgement.

Like Odinson, Jane found herself embroiled in momentous battles rather quickly. Her biggest enemy would prove to be time as her human body continued to fail.

Thor would go on to play a role in the Secret Wars , battle a power-hungry Odin one-on-one, join the Avengers, and team up with Doctor Strange, until she ran out of time. One more transformation into Thor would kill her, Strange warned her. But when a foe appeared that only she could defeat, Jane completed that final transformation, and died a true hero. She was resurrected by the combined power of the All-Father and Odinson, who was once again worthy to wield the power of Thor.

But no matter the reason Portman picks up the hammer in Thor: Love and Thunder, she will be worthy. Warning : full spoilers ahead for Thor: Love and Thunder! With Thor: Love and Thunder hitting theaters, we finally know the answer to one of the biggest burning questions about the movie: how exactly does Jane Foster Natalie Portman become the Mighty Thor? The main issue with Jane Foster becoming Thor in the movie is how she becomes Thor. Later in the film, a flashback to when Jane and Thor were still a couple shows exactly how she was able to wield Mjolnir.

In a moment of wistful affection for his girlfriend, Thor asked his trusty hammer to always protect Jane, and in doing so unwittingly enchanted Mjolnir to do just that. Thor made a special exception for her. As we all well know, a character being worthy enough to lift Mjolnir is an incredibly rare and special thing in the world of Marvel.

So creating a loophole that allows Jane to pick it up, regardless of her worthiness, robs her of what makes the Mighty Thor so special. She confronted one of the scientists when Darcy interrupted her to show her live footage of Thor in Manhattan. Jane Foster is an astrophysicist who met Thor when he was exiled to Earth by his father. The two had an intense attraction in the short time they were together, and through Jane, Thor learned the value of humility and the heroic nature of humanity.

Jane was mentioned by Thor at Tony Stark’s party and he bragged about her laudable work in the scientific field. Five years after the Decimation, a drunken Thor mentioned Jane’s encounter with the Aether as a time when the Reality Stone’s location was known. Thor called Jane both an old flame and his ex and went into a bit of a drunken ramble about her.

Jane is a strong and determined woman, with an obstinate will and an independent spirit. She firmly believes that scientists have been invested with the mission of searching the truth and loyally follows this idealism. She possesses a deep knowledge for her study field, astrophysics, and of her peers. She came the closest to discovering the existence of Asgard by studying the wormhole-like traces left by the use of the Bifrost Bridge.

Jane’s mother died of cancer and her father died of a heart attack when she was young. Eventually her marriage to Kincade dissolves and she loses custody of her son, Jimmy, but they both end up dying in a car accident. After Nick Fury whispers something to Thor, later revealed to be “Gorr was right” — referring to the idea that no gods are worthy — Odinson loses the ability to wield Mjolnir. An unknown woman, however, ends up lifting it and ends up taking on the mantle of Thor. Unfortunately for Jane, while wielding Mjolnir as Thor purges the cancer from her body, it also removes the chemotherapy chemicals helping to fight the cancer.

So whenever she stops wielding Mjolnir and returns to her mortal state, she gets sicker. Thor: Love and Thunder is said to follow a lot of the cancer subplot from the Aaron run. However, there are no current reports suggesting Thor is going to become unworthy at any point during the film. Given the hefty anticipation in seeing Portman finally get her chance to wield the hammer, fans are eagerly awaiting to see Mighty Thor much more throughout the MCU.

One can dream. The power of Thor will go to Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, but this story has its origin in the comics. By Kelly Knox. Posted: May 24, pm. Warning: Spoilers follow for the Thor comics.
