As well as simply trimming your clips, you can add music, text and images, and resize everything for different social media destinations. When we reviewed Creative Cloud Express, we found the interface very simple to use, and we were impressed by the quality of the templates.

That said, its video editing capabilities are certainly the most limited on this list; in all honesty, it’s more like a glorified slideshow maker than a ‘proper’ video editing app. That said, if you want to get a social media video live as quickly as possible, and aren’t too concerned about the overall quality, it does make things nice and quick.

For more, see our Creative Cloud Express review. VideoPad is a free video editor with a simple interface suitable for novices, but it also offers plenty of features for advanced users. It’s essentially a limited version of the paid versions, which offer extra features, and unlimited exports. You can only use it for non-commercial work, and it limits the number of projects you can export.

Most notable of all is the level of control VideoPad gives over audio, which makes it a great choice for movie sequences that rely on audio effects. It supports an unlimited number of audio tracks and provides an entire library of sound effects to play with. VideoPad also allows 3D video editing, a rare feature among free video editing tools. It also has great options for social sharing, with a library of social media-friendly effects and transitions and the option to post videos to platforms like Facebook or YouTube without leaving the software.

We’ll be honest: there’s not a lot of free video editing software for Chromebooks. But Kinemaster, which is also available on Android and iOS, is a fairly decent exception. As long as you’re fine with watermarked videos, that is. To remove these, you’ll need to subscribe to the premium version. In our review we found its interface to be very intuitive, and so it should be relatively easy for beginners to use, especially for simple tasks like applying Instagram filters and using sliders to adjust brightness, contrast and saturation.

At the same time, this tool would also be useful for more experienced video editors wishing to make tweaks on the fly on their phones, tablets or Chromebooks.

It won’t replace full desktop software by any means, but it’s a handy complement to it. And it’s certainly more feature rich than most mobile-focused editing app, with colour grading, chroma key, audio mixing and beat sync all on the menu.

However, in , it’s not quite so competitive. The free tier offers lots of the same editing experience as its paid-for siblings, but with a huge catch: the export options are incredibly limited. You can only export videos in p for example, and higher-res exports, as well as the ability to use popular file formats like AVI, WAV and MOV, are all locked to higher tiers. It’s still got a place on this list though. Because if you don’t need p or higher exports, yet still want a professional-level editing experience, Lightworks might be good for you.

It also has a few features that aren’t available in all free video editing software, like multi-track editing and easy project collaboration features. When we reviewed Lightworks, we found it a bit of a mixed bag. Some of the features were very intuitive and time-saving. For example, when you preview a clip in the source monitor, rather than having to manually set input and output points, the last watched section is automatically selected.

But in other ways, we found it a bit clunky. For example, it doesn’t display waveforms for audio clips, which slows down finding the part of a track you want to use. Also, in our tests — on a Macbook Pro running macOS Another thing we found quite annoying is that the free licence actually expires every seven days. Yes, it can be renewed by simply signing back into the application with your username and password, but it’s an extra step, and reiterates that the company is really keen on you upgrading to the paid option.

Read our Lightworks review to learn more. There are a number of factors to take into account when choosing free video editing software. The first is what you want to use it for. If it’s for non-commercial projects — such as editing your personal holiday footage, or working on a student project — then any of the software on our list will be fine.

If you need it for commercial work , though, then some free tools such as VideoPad don’t allow this at all, while others such as Kinemaster will add watermarks , making them unsuitable for such purposes. Another factor is your level of experience. If you’re an old hand at video editing, particularly if you work as a professional, you’ll want a range of sophisticated features to draw on; in which case, DaVinci Resolve and Hitfilm Express are our top picks. If you’re more of a beginner, amateur or hobbyist, though, these packages may well be too confusing and difficult to use.

In which case, we’d recommend looking at numbers on our list, which have much simpler, more user-friendly interfaces. Be aware, too, that free software often comes with restrictions.

For example, there may be limits to the number, format or resolution of files you can export. Customer support may or may not be available via phone or email. And the software may only support Windows , Mac or Linux rather than all three platforms.

In our view, the best free video editing software for professionals is DaVinci Resolve from Blackmagic. Whilst it began as a colour correction tool, it’s grown over time to cover everything for basic trimming to visual effects, motion graphics, audio post-production and more. In short, DaVinci Resolve gives you a full video editing suite at your fingertips, for zero cost. With its minimalistic interface, Shotcut is capable of all the essential video editing operations, including such challenging ones as film restoration, footage stabilization, and white balancing.

Applying effects is even more convenient because of the real-time preview you get from the left-side filters menu. Simply choose the filters you’d like to try on the footage and go through the checkboxes to see how they look on the picture in the right-side preview window.

What makes Shotcut stand out as a video editor for Windows 10 though, is the Chroma Keying tool. Movie Maker didn’t have the feature-set for removing a green background from videos and images – you could only perform the operation through a 3rd-party plugin quite a painful sequence of actions.

Shotcut in its turn allows for applying this advanced effect quickly and easily. Perhaps, that’s the reason TechRadar has named it among the software to replace Windows Essentials suite components. What else is good: the ability to quickly reverse your actions in a non-linear order. As mentioned before, each filter or effect you apply to the footage is eventually listed in the left-side window with a marked checkbox.

That means you can uncheck any box at any time without having to start the editing process all over again. Where to get it: Shotcut official website. If the previously mentioned software overwhelmed you a bit with the fancy non-linear video editing technology or the endless lists of features, you’ll love Avidemux. There seem to be no creative element involved. You won’t find multiple video tracks or file library.

In a nutshell, you can only cut, copy, paste and encode. May it not turn you away from Avidemux though. If you have little to no interest in all those post-production bells and whistles, and only need to quickly cut out a piece of footage, go for it. Download Avidemux and you’ll never regret.

Not only does it take less than 3 seconds to install this software, it also provides the fastest and probably the clearest way to cut a video file into fragments.

Once you’ve set the markers for the required time frame, simply go to the “Edit” tab in the upper menu and choose what you want to do – cut, copy, or delete the piece.

Once you’re done, you can go ahead and choose video and audio output parameters. For such a basic and free tool, Avidemux has a noteworthy set of codecs to choose from. This is why calling it not just a video editor, but also an encoder is more correct.

Truth be told, there are few filters available at the configuration level – such as interlacing, noise or sharpness – but they seem to be more technically-inclined rather than serve creative purposes. Lightworks is advanced enough that the Pro version has been used to create multiple award-winning movies including the likes of Pulp Fiction and The Wolf of Wall Street, but the free version is only marginally less full-featured.

There’s a wide range of tools to create professional-looking videos, including some fairly advanced audio-editing options, VFX, color adjustments and more. And while the interface may take a little getting used to, even a beginner can master the essentials relatively easily. It also works on almost every platform, with versions for Windows, Mac and Linux. In fact, Lightworks Free has been made simpler in the version — some advanced features have been removed but a bunch of user-friendly options have been added, including 80 new transitions.

A recent update to The main drawback is that with the free version, output options max out at p — but depending on what you’re planning to upload your film to, that may not matter.

Recent updates tweaked the interface and added Touch Bar support for the latest Macs, plus it now lets users edit and adjust focus in videos shot with the iPhone 13 range’s new Cinematic Mode. It’s also now been optimized for the latest Apple Silicon, so it’ll have improved performance when used on the new MacBook Pro 14 or inch models and the M1 Pro or M1 Max chips. Compared to HitFilm’s high-energy interface, VideoPad has a simple, soothing look which makes it the best free video editing software for novices. It works with both Macs and PCs and still lets you edit degree video with the same ease as you would traditional movies, though adding text to degree clips can be a bit tricky. VideoPad also lacks some of the advanced features you’ll find with HitFilm, for instance multicam editing, high-end special effects and motion tracking — but you can purchase a number of add-ons to expand VideoPad’s feature set.

Our biggest issue with VideoPad was not knowing which features were disabled in the free version versus the trial and paid versions. We found VideoPad to be a bit slower on our transcoding tests than Hitfilm, too.
