I think it’s the lack of density that can put you on a 2 lane road 10 minutes outside of downtown and you feel as though you’re the only one I wouldn’t ever classify the Twin Cities as feeling small town, but it is unique in that a metro of 3.

I can’t think of any “big city” that has a “small-town feel”. Small-town feel would be everyone knows everyone, everyone shops at one store, everyone attends the same church, school, etc. That doesn’t apply to cities over the , threshold. Maybe a better answer to this would be something like Fayetteville, NC, where the population numbers are inflated thanks to Fort Bragg.

Compared to growing up in LA, SF is tiny to me. It was the first city I moved to after LA and I’ll never forget how small it felt and how trapped I felt. Because of this it feels a lot smaller than it actually is for being the 8th largest city. I’ve been to Los Angeles and the Redondo Beach area. I found nothing “small town” about it.
