Verified Purchase. Excellent maps to visit the national parks in Utah. Bought these maps for a Utah hiking trip and used them every night to plan the next day’s hikes. Detailed enough to provide the guidance and direction we needed. Good quality, heavy paper. We have bought a few of this brand of maps for different National Parks.

It’s waterproof which is a must for anyone hiking in the mountains. We have never had issues with accuracy. It is labeled clearly and perfect size to fit in a backpack.

My favorite thing about it is that it doesn’t seem to show wrinkles. Awesome maps with great value for the money. Won’t tear. Was very helpful during our recent road trip to the park areas of South Utah. We hiked a lot and the maps were great. A lot easier to grasp the geography of the parks on a map than on your phone and it helps a lot with planning for next day while eating dinner at the campsite.

Content about the geology and specificity of the parks is interesting too. High quality map both paper and content I did not manage to damage at all during our 10 days.

I’d recommend getting another “All of Utah” map for the driving part. The driving distance between the furthest points however, the Cajon Group to the Cutthroat Castle Group is only 25 minutes. I recommend seeing the Square Tower Group as the most impressive of the ruins. While in the area be sure to check out Canyon of the Ancients National Monument also included on this list. Visiting Hovenweep can be a bit of a challenge as it is a remote national monument located in the four corners region of Colorado and Utah.

The closest sizable city is Durango, Colorado at just under two hours away. The closest major city to Hovenweep is Albuquerque despite being just under 5 hours away. One of the newest national monuments, Jurassic National Monument protects the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry which contains the largest concentration of Jurassic dinosaur fossils ever found.

The monument is very remote and fairly small at just acres, but it has three nice hiking trails each around 2 miles offering beautiful views and opportunities to see petroglyphs. The caves feature numerous colorful and unique formations and offer visitors a glimpse of the incredible natural world beneath our feet. At feet tall, feet wide, and a thickness of 42 feet at the top , Rainbow Bridge is one of the largest natural bridges in the world. Beyond that, the arch itself is breathtakingly beautiful and absolutely massive in person located in the Lake Powell region of Utah.

Getting to the monument is actually easy… if you have a boat in Lake Powell. If this is the case you can pull your boat right up to the trailhead and hike an easy mile to get there. Otherwise, and for most of us, getting there involves an arduous multi-day hike through the desert after obtaining a permit from the good folks at the Navajo Nation.

Spend the night at a hotel in Moab see above or camp outside the national park in one of the many beautiful campgrounds along the Colorado River. I recommend packing a lunch to maximize your time in the park! Check what time the sunrise is in Moab beforehand and start the hike at least 45 minutes before the sun is set to rise I recommend an hour. Bring headlamps and watch closely for the easy to miss signs. After the sunrise continue toward the far end of the park and check out the Fiery Furnace , Sand Dune Arch , and Skyline Arch before stopping for lunch if you packed one at the Devils Garden Trailhead in the car or on benches.

After lunch check out the Devils Garden area and be sure to see Landscape Arch hard to miss before heading back toward the park entrance. Day 3 starts with one of the best sunrises in Utah — the world famous Mesa Arch sunrise. The trail is short but be sure to get to the arch at least 30 minutes early for a good spot it will be crowded. On your way back out of the park be sure to stop off and check out the epic Shafer Trail Viewpoint.

The route to Capitol Reef is pretty cool, especially as you get closer to the park itself. If you have time, catch a sunset at Sunset Point in Capitol Reef. Epic views at the beginning of the park. This drive is one of the absolute highlights of the trip and is not to be missed but it is not the natural way your GPS will route you.

Be sure to add Escalante, Utah as a pin to your route or risk missing this stunner. If you arrive at Bryce Canyon with enough time for sunset then check out the aptly named Sunset Point. Day 5 starts in beautiful Bryce Canyon National Park which is quite compact compared to some of the others. It is also the coolest in temperature as the visitor center sits at feet elevation so pack a jacket! Start your morning with a brisk sunrise at Inspiration Point which is superior to Sunrise Point in my humble opinion also less crowded.

From there, hike the Navajo Loop Trail in reverse ending with the impressive Wall Street section wow. If you feel like extending this hike then I highly recommend adding the Queens Garden loop or a piece of the Peekaboo Canyon Trail.

If you want to see more then continue down N Bryce Canyon Road past Bryce Natural Bridge roadside stop to the end of the road 30 minute drive. From Bryce Canyon the drive continues through the Dixie National Forest which is well worth the visit in its own right — a fraction of the visitors and equally stunning scenery and the beautiful Red Canyon area featured in our film below to the east entrance of Zion National Park.

Upon entering the east entrance of Zion via the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway the scenery changes drastically in a wonderful way. Watch out for Bighorn sheep as you near the third tunnel! After passing through this tunnel visitors are given their first look at the epic canyons of Zion.

If you make it to Zion in time, catch a sunset from around the Canyon Junction Bridge famous view of the Watchman. Day 6 starts with a great opportunity to skip the sunrise Zion is not full of epic sunrises. I recommend starting the day early with the epic Narrows hike one of my all time favorites. This will slow you down and add expense so I recommend bringing something. It will be shockingly crowded at this hour. Making the first shuttle makes a big difference or at least one of the first. After Angels Landing, eat lunch packed or at the Zion Lodge.

Big Bend is great for a quick stop and the Grotto is great although many of the trails here are currently closed. Fo r sunset I recommend my favorite sunset in the park, Lava Point Overlook.

If possible, try and grab a site at Lava Point Campground which only has 6 sites and is the best in the park. After a morning of exploring Kolob Terrace head over to Kolob Canyon for afternoon activities and another epic sunset. Kolob Canyon is another lesser-traveled section of Zion that is worth a visit.

Timber Creek Overlook is oen of the best places in Zion to catch a sunset. The trail is short and epic. The last day is basically just making your way back to Salt Lake City to return the rental car and flying home. Ah but the memories! I can not recommend visiting this national forest any more strongly. It is an incredible and overlooked piece of Utah that has a tiny fraction of the visitors of the Utah Mighty 5.

After a too-brief visit on our first trip, I made sure to spend extra time at Capitol Reef the second time around.

Full of cliffs, slot canyons, river gorges, rock arches, fossils, and native artifacts, these public lands rival the other National Parks in Utah. Unfortunately, these attractions are extremely spread out and not as accessible.

Adding Canyonlands to your Utah National Parks driving tour may depend on how much time you have. Check the Canyonlands Park website for visitor information. Canyonlands campgrounds. No Utah National Parks road trip itinerary is complete without a stop in Arches. True to its name, this open desert landscape is home to thousands of red rock archways and other fun stone formations.

Arches National Park is located just outside of Moab, an outdoor adventure hot spot of its own. Technically , you could see the Utah Big 5 in a five day road trip. Driving distance is short enough, but this would allow very little time to actually enjoy yourself. We recommend at least a one week Utah road trip itinerary. Two weeks in Utah National Parks would be even more ideal to get off the beaten path and explore the best of all the parks. That means avoiding school breaks, hot summers, and freezing winters.

Typically, Fall is a great time to take a southwest National Park road trip through Utah. Arches and Canyonlands are on the East near Moab, Utah.

Each of these national parks in Utah tells its own fantastic story. Rust orange arches, soaring spires, and cascading fins sprinkle this landscape of extremes. The park is located on the northern extremity of the Colorado Plateau , resulting in hot and dry temperatures and sometimes temperature swings of up to 40 degrees in one day!

Visitors are welcome to enjoy the various vistas, hiking trails, and camping opportunities the park offers. Of these, the most notable include a moderate 2-mile hike through a winding maze of shattered fins known as the Fiery Furnace; or the Double Arch, which is the tallest, and second-longest arch in the park. Located close to the Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park is home to countless canyons carved out by the slow, enduring sculpting of wind and water.

Divided into four regions, the park offers sightseeing and adventure opportunities that suit any traveler. The first and most accessible district, Islands in the Sky, features a paved scenic drive and a variety of hiking trails for those wanting to explore on foot. The second region, The Needles, is home to less-explored backcountry routes and some of the most breathtaking landscapes on earth. The least accessible and most isolated district, The Maze, is chock-full of offroading adventure perfect for the seasoned explorer.

Finally, the Green and Colorado Rivers wind through the park’s heart, creating a stark contrast between the dry, hot desert and the green, shady riverbanks teeming with life.

As its name suggests, Capitol Reef National Park is home to impressively sheer cliff sides, soaring monoliths, and rocky ridges that hinder travel, akin to ocean reefs. Located a few minutes west of Torrey, in the center of southern Utah, Capitol Reef National Park is open year-round for visitors.

The park’s most accessible section is the Fruita section which features a paved scenic drive, a campground, countless hikes, and more than 2, fruit trees! Today, visitors can stroll through the orchards and snack on fresh fruit directly from the trees. The southern corner of the park houses the mile Waterpocket Fold, a protuberance in the earth’s crust that has eroded into winding canyons of folded earth.

A geological feature 50 to 70 million years in the making, this wrinkle in the earth’s surface exposes a striking landscape unlike any other. Bryce Canyon National Park is a mile circuit that dramatically unveils sweeping sandstone rock walls, hauntingly beautiful hoodoos, and spires that work their way up to the clouds. With the gain in elevation comes a landscape like no other — including the largest concentration of hoodoos anywhere on earth! Each year, the park sees over two million visitors that come to bask in its eerie, iron-rich beauty, usually between March and October.

Of these visitors, some are comfortable exploring its vast backcountry, while others find delight in its numerous dining options, comfortable lodging, and an endless array of recreational activities. Located in southwestern Utah, near the city of Springdale, Zion is home to chiseled canyons that follow the horizon, rainbow-colored layers of rock, and high mesas that are anything but ordinary.

Today, it is the 4th most visited national park in the United States, with over 4. Others still wind and rappel their way through canyoneering routes that are not for the faint of heart.
